It’s a question that I ask myself frequently.
“What’s your story? What makes you different from your peers?”
I always hear that everyone has their own path to follow, be it they’re in the same profession. Everyone has a story, but that’s not to say articulating your story or who you are is easy.
If you think about it, it’s also an interview question “Tell me about yourself”. We’re taught, or at least I was, that we should talk a bit about our current role, scope, and accomplishments, but is that really the right way to tell someone what your story is? It’s standard, but I don’t think it’s the best way to articulate your story. You’re more than just your job and accomplishments. Your culture, parents, specific events, that a-ha moment… all that ties into shaping who you are and why you do what you do.
It’s so important to know who you are. Studies say it helps you build;
Confidence/Understanding of your worth
Understanding of others
I realised that the buddy program at the SaaS Trial Rocketship course where we catch up with a different buddy every week has been a great catalyst for me. Talking about myself with someone forces me to reflect and articulate different versions of stories. Sometimes I go back and think “Why did I say that?”, or at times “mm.. I just articulated a story of myself that I never thought about before”. I find that when I’m put in the spot… there’s new things that I discover about myself, and it helps in formulating my “story” and understanding who I am.
It’s been so fun being able to hear and learn about others too; what makes them different, things that make you go “WOW! I would love to be like that too”. I’m looking forward to more catch ups and chats with my cohort.
